Our values

Customer in every room: This value is at the heart of our mission: we are a tool company, and we exist to help our customers do their life’s work. Serving customers is our only quest. Anything else is secondary. This is especially true in a fast-changing time like today: we cannot go wrong by making our customers successful.
- Start with the customer. In decisions and trade-offs, we prioritize: Customer → Company → Team → Self.
- Leave the building! At Notion, our taste is a strength, but it can also get us stuck in our own heads. Go close to our customers so we actually see the problems they care about.
- Customers in every room. We have plush characters in every conference room to represent the customer and to keep the customer perspective close.

Own the outcome: AI commoditized a lot of capabilities. What really matters is agency: the ability to spot opportunities, take initiative, and own the outcome. Notion was built by people no more extraordinary than you, so we don’t wait for someone else to define the path. Agency is a muscle. Exercise it!
- You can just do things. Abundance mindset. No one needs permission to make Notion better! Every day, we leave our egos and org chart at the door, your lane is whatever it takes to deliver for our customers. And AI has 10x our market so there’s white space everywhere. Keep your abundance mindset hat on!
- Tend to the garden. Notion’s success is our collective responsibility. So, we pull weeds as we notice them, unprompted, and we leave things better than we find them.
- Nothing is sacred. Disrupting ourselves. We challenge every assumption, and we do not fear reinventing ourselves. Reinventing ourselves is in our DNA and we have done so multiple times in the past (this is why our codebase is called notion-next). We look up to the great artists who have done it again and again: Miles Davis, Picasso, Steve Jobs & Apple.
- No passengers. Hire for agency. Another thing we like to say is Notion is a small bus. On this bus, we need everyone to step up and drive. We don’t want passive passengers.

Why not today: The AI era is extremely competitive. In this environment, collective urgency and speed are the best thing to help a company survive and thrive. Instead of saying “let’s do it next week,” we make a habit of asking “why not today?”
- Bias toward action. Most decisions are two-way doors (with few exceptions like security, customer trust). Indecision costs more than a wrong call. So pick a decider, think through how you’d reverse it if needed, and go. If no one steps up to own it, that’s your cue. Anyone can be the decider. Don’t wait for permission.
- Movement creates information. This also relates to “Customer in every room” and “Own the outcome.” The market is full of unknowns. We don’t know better. The reality is out there in customers’ needs, so you need to dial up your agency and just move around and learn more; then you’ll have a better answer.
- Double or half. We never let speed limit our ambition. Our Infra team coined a question to force step-change thinking: what will double the good things for our customers, and halve the bad ones? Many new things are possible with new tooling and AI now, so when you set goals, this is your starting point.

Direct and kind: Notion is a kind group of humans. The previous version of this value was “kind and direct,” but we are switching the order to put directness up front. We believe dialing up our collective directness in this moment will accelerate how we build trust, win more, and drive better outcomes for our customers. This, in turn, makes the work a lot more fun and fulfilling.
- Directness is kindness. Say the hard thing. Say it in the room, say it in the public Slack. Don’t nod in meetings, then whisper your real opinion in DMs after. That doesn’t help anyone.
- Feedback is a gift. From interns to Staff, every Notino receives it gratefully, recognizing that someone cares enough to help us grow.
- The journey is the reward. Be honest with each other the way good friends are. Assume positive intent. Keep our humor. Take the work seriously, not ourselves. Do that, and when we’re old, the part we’ll remember is building Notion together.
